James Hazel is a composer, sound-artist and researcher. His extended sonic practice spills into installation, performance, spoken-word, and video.  Hazel’s work is often archival, and inescapably polemical - recently concerned with the latent, and laboured rituals of the sonic, socio-cultural, political, and technocratic - and what it means to work/live within limited material conditions - always guided by his own socio-economic positionality.

Hazel’s work has been presented by/at: Ensemble Mise-en (New York); Ensemble Offspring; Concept Ensemble (Brisbane); 15 Minutes of Fame (USA); VIVID; International Video Dance Festival of Burgundy; Gondwana Choirs (Sydney); Cellist Nicholas McManus; Sam Gill; and Sonant Bodies; Maitland Regional Art Gallery; The Lockup Gallery; City of Sydney; Sydney Conservatorium; Pinnacles Gallery; Bundanon Trust; and Scanlines.  He has workshopped pieces with Nicholas Russoniello; and Line Upon Line (USA) - and participated in masterclass with composers such as Johannes Kreidler, among others. James has scored an Australian Dance Award winning production; awarded the NIDA-Sponsored Emerging Artist Award; and been featured as a finalist in the 7th International Media Arts Award.

James is deeply invested in building collaborative coalitions - he is co-founder of several projects: co-editor of adsrzine.com; co-founder/director of the The Opera Company; and founder of Precarioustexts.com.
